Dr. Shepherd Urenje is a Programme Specialist in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) with the Swedish International Centre of Education for Sustainable Development (SWEDESD). His current work supports teaching and learning of environment and sustainability within and among countries in Scandinavia, Africa and Asia. His expertise includes facilitating learning for change strategies that develop in learners, 21st century skills for a changing world.

Dr. Shepherd Urenje studied Developmental Education at the University of London, United Kingdom. His professional background includes teaching environmental science and development education in Zimbabwe, Regional Programme Manager for Education and Training at Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Principal Examiner of Environmental Science in the UK.

His most recent engagements include:

• Nominated by UNESCO to be the global coordinator of the Global Action Programme (GAP) of priority action area 3, on increasing the capacities of educators and trainers to mainstream ESD in their work more effectively.
• Appointed by UNESCO as lead facilitator and key partner in developing the ESD capacity of 60 teacher education institutions in Southern Africa and Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Programme.
• Training Programme Director of the Baltic University Programme (BUP) on the recently formed capacity development course on mainstreaming ESD in universities of the Baltic Sea region.
• Successfully developed and implemented a new institutional capacity development programme for leaders in education — now used in 14 countries in Southern and East Africa.
• Directed the development and implementation of new methods/approaches for capacity development — presently adopted by 42 institutions of Teacher Education in South-East Africa and Sweden.
