Katharina Kreppel

Prof Katharina Kreppel is an epidemiologist specializing in emerging infectious diseases and the One Health approach. She leads the Emerging Infectious Disease Unit at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), where her team is currently investigating emerging diseases across South America, Africa, and Asia as well as in Belgium. Her research also focuses on rodent-borne diseases like Mpox and plague as well as arboviroses such as dengue and malaria in countries such as Cuba, Tanzania, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Africa, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary methods.
With extensive experience in disease in the One health approach, vector ecology and zoonotic disease epidemiology, Katharina has worked across multiple continents to understand how environmental and behavioral factors influence transmission risks. She lived and worked for 14 years in Madagascar and Tanzania since starting her PhD at the University of Liverpool and the Institut Pasteur de Madagascar.
