Heidy Rombouts, the new National Director of Plan International Belgium, has been active in the field of international development cooperation and human rights for twenty years. She is an expert in international cooperation in conflict zones and has been particularly involved in the World Bank's situation strategy. Before joining Plan International Belgium in September 2020, Heidy Rombouts worked on the Board of Directors of the World Bank Group in Washington, D.C., where she represented the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation. In addition, she worked with the Belgian Technical Cooperation (now Enabel) in Brussels and Mali, was project manager for the German Development Agency (GIZ) in Kenya and project coordinator for a United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights (UN Human Rights Council). She has worked closely with national and international governments, but also with local actors and civil society in different countries.
She has also been closely associated with the Institute for Development Policy and Management as a researcher and policy advisor. She holds a PhD in social and political sciences from the University of Antwerp. She holds a master's degree in law and a master's degree in sociology from the KU Leuven.
