Dr Jean de Dieu Havyarimana
Director of the National Integrated Programme for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases | Ministry of Public Health, Burundi

Dr Havyarimana is a key institutional figure in the development of rehabilitation in Burundi. He heads the Burundian National Programme for Combating Chronic Diseases at the Ministry of Public Health and coordinates all government activities related to rehabilitation. He is also responsible for universal health coverage and palliative care in connection with chronic illnesses, injuries, and mental health.

He led the drafting and implementation of several national strategic plans for rehabilitation (2023–2027), incorporating the training of human resources, sustainable financing, and access to assistive technologies. Under his leadership, Burundi has strengthened governance in the sector and fostered triangular partnerships with universities and international NGOs.

He has an in-depth understanding of the Burundian health system, having previously served as Chief Medical Officer of a health district for one year and as Director of a District Hospital for three years prior to his appointment as Programme Director.
