Joan DeJaeghere is Associate Professor of Comparative and International Development Education at the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development of the University of Minnesota, USA.

Joan DeJaeghere’s scholarly work and professional practice are concerned with inequalities in education and how education can provide possibilities for individual and societal change toward equality. Her research examines how poverty, gender relations, and ethnic relations affect educational participation, and how educational participation can enhance civic engagement, future livelihoods and wellbeing. She has co-edited two special issues and published articles and books chapters on gender equality in education, education for citizenship, and ethnic inequalities and educational policy. 

Dr. DeJaeghere co-led a research project on education for marginalized girls and boys, with CARE USA and CARE local staff in 8 countries. She was also a research consultant to Miske Witt and Associates, Inc. in the development and testing of several measures related to gender equity and leadership for CARE. She currently serves as the co-principal investigator (with David Chapman) of The MasterCard Foundation-sponsored Learn, Earn, Save project that is assessing the impact of entrepreneurship training on the lives of disadvantaged youth in East Africa.
