Togo Debout asbl wants to contribute to ‘une Afrique qui se met debout’, an Africa that stands upright and takes its destiny into its own hands. To this end, Togo Debout supports local development projects in Togo in various areas of social and economic life: health, welfare, education & training and rural development. Togo Debout gathers the necessary material, financial and human resources for this purpose.
Togo Debout is particularly keen to focus on sustainable projects. Therefore, the association chooses to respond primarily to needs, ideas and proposals from the local communities themselves, who then take further responsibility for them. With this in mind, the projects supported by Togo Debout pay a lot of attention to capacity building.
Togo Debout is a Belgian non-profit organisation, with three permanent local employees. The association is also legally recognised in Togo.
Three lines of force underpin its operation:
- Cooperation with local partners: they are the project owners, Togo Debout acts as facilitator.
- Development cooperation instead of humanitarian aid: support by Togo Debout always aims to promote local autonomy.
- Promoting sustainability, including by adopting an integrated approach rather than isolated projects. The merging of several projects within different areas of the same zone, leads to more sustainable results.
Currently, Togo Debout is active in, for example, an orphanage project, an education project (including the development of a documentation and information centre for schools from a number of bush villages, sending out Flemish education trainees), a rehabilitation centre, the street children's project ANGE, and others.
