On 29 September 2016, Educaid.be and its member organisation, Plan-Belgium, organized a lunch discussion with Vernor Muñoz, Plan International’s Global Advisor on Education. Mr Muñoz presented his assessment of the current international debate around education in a development context, one year after the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals.

SDG 4 – Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all – has created a new framework for education in development, as the new commitments of the international community provide more opportunities for children and youth in developing countries. This lunch discussion provided us with an opportunity to learn more about the current debate around the implementation of this important goal. It also provided an interesting preview to the 2016 Annual Conference of Educaid.be, to be held on 17 November 2016.

Vernor Muñoz is the former UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education (2004-2010). He has worked for over 30 years in human rights, combining his duties in the governmental sector and non-government organisations with his career as university professor and grassroots level activist. Author of many books specialised in human rights, he holds of degrees in Literature, Law, Human Rights, Philosophy as well as a Ph.D. in Education. Mr Muñoz has also received Costa Rica’s “National Award”.
