Elaine Unterhalter

Dr Elaine Unterhalter is Professor of Education and International Development at the Institute of Education of the UCL.

Dr Unterhalter works on themes concerned with gender, race and class inequalities and their bearing on education. Her specialist interests are in the capability approach and human development and education in Africa, particularly South Africa. Her current concerns are with education, poverty and global social justice.

She is currently engaged in a 3-year research project on Gender and Teacher Education in Nigeria (2014-2016) funded by the MacArthur Foundation. In 2013, she worked on a number of research projects reviewing the MDGs and the SDGs with publications appearing in the journals Compare and the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities. She was involved in a 5-year project led by ActionAid “Transforming education for girls in Tanzania and Nigeria” (2008-2013) which combined research, advocacy and community intervention to engage in teacher development, and work with girls to challenge violence and gender inequalities. In 2015 she will be one of the co-organisers of a series of seminars, sponsored by the UK ESRC, looking at academic collaborations with NGOs. Her co-edited book on “Education and International Development: An introduction” is due to be published by Bloomsbury in January 2015.
