2016 Global Education Monitoring Report Launch
Education for people and planet: Creating sustainable futures for all
10:00am-12:00pm, Tuesday September 6, 2016
Kelvin Lecture Theatre, IET Savoy Place
2 Savoy Place, London WC2R 0BL
Drawing on a well-tested model and twelve reports produced since 2002, the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report has received a new mandate to monitor progress towards the ambitious Sustainable Development Goal 4 (“ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”), as well as education targets in other SDGs of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The first in a fifteen-year series, this year’s GEM Report examines the reciprocal links between education and key areas of the sustainability agenda: reducing poverty, eradicating hunger, improving health, fostering gender equality and women’s empowerment, promoting sustainable production and consumption, building resilient cities, and more equal and inclusive societies. Drawing on wide-ranging evidence and data sources, it builds compelling arguments on the types of education that are vital to achieve these facets of sustainable development.
This launch event will highlight the essential need for long-term collaborative relationships between the education sector and other sectors - from health and environment, to employment and justice - in order to tackle the most persistent challenges people and the planet face, and achieve our shared vision of a more inclusive, equitable and peaceful world.
