The Antwerp Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), founded in 1906, is an institute for postgraduate education, scientific research and scientific services in the fields of tropical human and veterinary medicine and health care in low- and middle-income countries. The ITM is a foundation of public utility and employs a staff of 450. ITM is subsidized by the Belgian Ministries of Education, Research, Development Cooperation and Health, along with competitive project financing, own income and private donations.
Innovative and interdisciplinary research focuses on the “3 P’s”: Pathogens (Department of Biomedical Sciences), Patients (Department of Clinical Sciences) and Populations (Department of Public Health).
ITM has a unique access to the field through 24 institutional partnerships across Africa, Asia and South-America. An Alliance for education in tropical medicine and international public health constitutes the framework for collaborative initiatives and exchange with partners and alumni world-wide. Yearly, an average of 500 scientists, medical doctors, nurses and other health professionals follow advanced courses at the institute and more than 100 international researchers are working on their PhD. ITM master of science programmes in international public health and tropical animal health are accredited by the Dutch Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO). Most specialised short courses are internationally (TropEd global network) accredited. Each year, the medical services perform approximately 40.000 consultations. More than 75% of ITM’s publications appear in the top quarter of academic journals in its field.
The ITM insures its scientific excellence and social relevance by the establishment of an integrated system for the continued assurance and improvement of quality, health, safety and environment.
